To date, given the multidisciplinarity of BCI's, there are no books which holistically cover the field for educational purposes, with most books requiring prior knowledge in advanced signal processing, machine learning, and neuroscience, hence they are targeted for experts in the field or graduate students with prior knowledge. Moreover, due to the increased demand that BCIs are showing in both the university classes and industry, there is the need for a broader educational text introducing the technology to university students from a broad range of domains.
Brain-Computer Interfaces: Applying our Minds to Human-Computer Interaction broadly surveys research in the Brain-Computer Interface domain. More specifically, each chapter articulates some of the challenges and opportunities for using brain sensing in Human-Computer Interaction work, as well as applying Human-Computer Interaction solutions to brain sensing work. The introductory chapters introduce all the necessary topics for transforming raw signals into meaningful interaction. Following this introduction, the following chapters will include the major types of BCI's (MI, P300, SSVEP) and examples from their application. The content of this book it will involve an end-to-end approach on introducing the design and implementation of BCI processing pipelines and how such can be interfaced with computer systems with specific use-cases in both the health the interaction domain. The topics covered will include the introduction of basic electrophysiology and how brain potentials are generated. Next every step of the EEG-based BCI processing pipeline will be analysed, starting from the acquisition of the raw signals, the required equipment, the processing tools and processing methodologies, filtering of the signals, the extraction of the features and finally the production of the control signal for controlling an end-effector device.
For advanced students or researchers with little or no expertise in neuroscience or brain sensing, the book provides background information to equip them to not only appreciate the state-of-the-art, but also ideally to engage in novel research. For expert Brain-Computer Interface researchers, the book introduces ideas that can help in the quest to interpret intentional brain control and develop the ultimate input device. It challenges researchers to further explore passive brain sensing to evaluate interfaces and feed into adaptive computing systems. Most importantly, the book will connect multiple communities allowing research to leverage their work and expertise and blaze into the future.

Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. This book provides a comprehensive and accessible introduction to the science and practice of braincomputer interfaces (BCIs), a rapidly evolving field at the intersection of neuroscience, engineering, computer science, and humancomputer interaction. Its primary purpose is to equip readers with the conceptual foundations and methodological tools needed to understand how BCIs work, how they are designed, and how they are applied in research, clinical, and emerging real-world contexts. The scope of the book spans the full BCI pipeline, with equal emphasis on technical rigor and practical relevance. This volume is both an educational gateway and a lasting reference for understanding contemporary braincomputer interfaces.Key Features:Pedagogical features include exercises and end-of-chapter summariesAccompanied by MATLAB and Python codeHow to use EEGs to develop more intuitive BCIs in real-time scenariosIntroductory approach accessible to advanced students and ECRs in academia and industry This book offers a clear, comprehensive introduction to braincomputer interfaces (BCIs), covering the principles, methods, paradigms, and applications that enable direct interaction between brain activity and technology. It is designed to guide students and newcomers from foundational concepts to modern, human-centered BCI systems used in research and real-world settings.
