Creating the Molecules of Life discusses origins, including the Big Bang, and the origin of the elements. With a complete presentation and explanation, this book provides evidence that the molecules of life are produced in outer space and how the SNAAP model purports to explain that origin. Extremophiles, which explains that evolution is robust enough to create life forms in a wide variety of conditions, is also presented. Readable for those at the upper undergraduate level, mathematics associated with coupling the nuclear spins to the molecular chirality is discussed. An accompanied appendix is provided to support mathematics.

Richard N Boyd and Michael A Famiano take up the question of where the amino acids came from, and why they have the handedness, or chirality, that life on Earth shows. They start from cosmic origins and argue that the molecules of life may have formed in space. They also set out the Supernova Neutrino Amino Acid Processing (SNAAP) model as an explanation. One chapter assesses competing explanations of amino acid chirality and how plausible each one is. These include circularly polarized light acting on Earth or in space, models in which the weak interaction selects chirality, magnetochiral dichroism, and selection on solid surfaces. For each model the chapter gives the experimental evidence. It then turns to amplification mechanisms such as autocatalysis, and to the experiments that have shown amplification toward homochirality.
