The European Solid State Device Conference has emerged in recent years as the premier European meeting covering all tyes of semiconductor device. The 20th meeting continues this trend with invited and contributed papers on topics of current importance to both the compound semiconductor and silicon communities. In the compound semiconductor field the importance of heterojunction structures in non-optical as well as optical devices is clear, the III-V and II-VI structures finding increasingly strong competition from Si/Ge based structures. Papers on bipolar and field-effect structures in the two materials system were placed together to encourage the interchange of ideas across this divide. The sessions on silicon devices reflect the increasing concerns of the device and circuit communities with the effects of hot electrons in sub-micron devices where the field strengths are extremely high, particularly with this dielectric layers, with the integrity of such layers being very dependent on the method of preparation. Silicon on insulator for MOS is a well-developed technology, and the potential advantages of this technology for other devices is apparent from a number of contributions.
