Synopsis

"It's the last time, son. I promise. Then it'll be you and me together - a place of our own. Just one more trip to Greenland." Left behind in Whitby with his hateful uncle, Joshua waits. After a year there is no news, only rumour. Is his father's ship stuck fast in the ice or battered to smithereens in a storm? Joshua takes the one thing that links him to his father, the Scoresby compass, and stows away on the Aurora, another whaler boat bound for the Arctic. On board he discovers an extraordinary gift - but also makes a terrible enemy...

From the Author

Compass Murphy is one of three books in The Running Tide, a loosely connected set of stand-alone stories which can be read in any order. It is set at the height of the Greenland whaling trade in the mid 1800s, and the action takes place in Whitby, Orkney, and frozen Arctic waters. The central characters, Joshua, a Whitby boy, and Simva, an Inuit girl, return as adults in the next book, The Ship Thief, which is set in Gold-Rush Alaska, and young men in that story return again in the third book, Hunting Gumnor, which is set in the kinder coastal waters of Britain. A love for the sea, and the ships which sail on it, runs through all the stories, which tell of storms and shipwreck, mutiny and curses, whale hunts and bear attacks, all seen through the eyes of the children at their centre.
