The AA's new guide to Britain is a chunky 400-page book, liberally illustrated with colour photographs. Compiled very much with family excursions in mind, it is an extremely useful source-book for half-term days out, bank holidays and weekends away. While the AA's other guides cover accommodation, pubs and restaurants, The Britain Guide focuses on attractions throughout Scotland, England and Northern Ireland: museums, theme parks, windmills, galleries, water wheels, gardens, forests, country parks, stately homes, churches, castles and so forth. There is also a small section covering the Republic of Ireland.
Alongside all the big pulls, this book provides an enticing tour of the bits of Britain you may never have thought of for leisure trips previously. For example, Mount Stewart House, not far from Belfast, promises a garden of rare subtropical trees and the intriguing named Temple of The Winds, while in Leeds there's the Tetley's Brewery Wharf where actors re-create the history of the English pub. In Slimbridge you can see Europe's biggest flock of flamingos. Some of the more esoteric sites are perhaps of specialist interest only. These include the Kings Lynn's African Violet Centre, the British Commercial Vehicle Museum in Leyland or Maidstone's museum of horse-drawn carriages!
If you are tempted to hop in the car for a trip to bits of our land you've previously ignored, the AA's trademark accurate road directions accompanying each listing mean the likelihood of getting lost--and having the arguments that inevitably go along with getting lost--is minimised. --Sarah Champion
