From the Author

The motive for writing this book came from my first management job. I was thrown in at the deep end and expected to swim. Many years later I realised that there were a lot of things I wish I'd known then, things which might have made my career take a very different course.

So I wrote 'The First-Time Manager'. It takes the practical experience gained from decades of working in business and the public sector and blends with it some of the more useful management theory taught in the business schools. I don't promise it will make you richer or more clever (though I hope it does). What it ought to do is to ensure that you are better-placed to hit the ground running in your new job as a a manager.
