Synopsis
Systems of simultaneous linear equations arise frequently in mathematics and in many other areas. This unit begins by considering simultaneous linear equations in two and three unknowns, introduces the idea of a solution set, and interprets the results geometrically. The method of Gauss-Jordan elimination is introduced and a strategy for solving systems of linear equations, based on performing elementary row operations on the augmented matrix of a system, is developed. The algebra of matrices is studied and the inverse of a matrix introduced.
One subsection is intended to be studied in conjunction with an audio, available in the Linear Algebra Block Pack (order code M208/MMPLA).
