The evaluation of functions is of great importance. If we are dealing with a polynomial function, then the calculation of its values is just a matter of arithmetic. On the other hand, the sine function is different; there is no way of calculating most of its values exactly just by the use of arithmetic.
This unit is concerned with a procedure for calculating approximate values of functions, like the sine function, which cannot be found exactly. It is shown that a certain sequence of polynomials can be used to calculate these values to any desired degree of accuracy.
One subsection is intended to be studied in conjunction with an audio, available in the Analysis B Block Pack (order code M208/MMPAB). The video programme, Calculating Pi, associated with this unit is available on DVD00126 (order code M208/DVD02).
