Synopsis

This unit is devoted to the study of infinite series. To avoid reaching absurd conclusions we perform arithmetic operations only with convergent infinite series. This concept is defined in terms of convergent sequences. Examples are given, and various properties which are common to all convergent series are described. Series with non-negative terms are tested for convergence, and the much harder problem of determining whether a series is convergent when it has both positive and negative terms is dealt with. A general strategy for testing a given series for convergence is given.

This unit depends heavily on the ideas and results of Unit AA2; therefore before studying this unit you should make sure that you understand Unit AA2, Sections 1, 2 and 3, and that you are familiar with Sections 4 and 5.

One subsection is intended to be studied in conjunction with an audio (available on CDA5570). The general video programme, Series and e, associated with this unit should be available on DVD00126 soon.
