While covering all the basic concepts, this treatment limits the theoretical demands made upon readers, uses simple models that still reflect the behavior of real substances, and connects readers with aspects of present-day research. This edition includes a section on the structure of atomic clusters, puts more emphasis on the dielectric function for the cooperative interaction of electrons in metals, and augments the material on metallic behavior with a description of the electronic structure of alloys.
