Synopsis

The love story portrayed in Truffaut's film "Jules et Jim" is familiar to millions of cinemagoers around the world. It is based on the novel, and indeed the life, of the writer Henri Pierre Roche. This love story unfolds in Paris but also encompasses rural Kent and Whitechapel, London.

Why I wrote Free Spirits
Why I wrote Free Spirits
I fell in love with Truffaut's rather strange film, Anne and Muriel, in the early 1970s and later discovered the novel on which it was based by Henri Pierre Roché, art connoisseur and intellectual Casanova, who was the lover of 'Anne' and 'Muriel'. Later still I found all the letters and diaries of the real 'Anne' and 'Muriel', and Henri Pierre's as well. The story of my book is about three layers - film (and how Truffaut made it), novel and reality. Thematically, it's about loving sisters and pairs of people, 'Casanova-ism', and new moralities early this century, amongst other things. But basically it is a story - of 'Anne' and 'Muriel', or Violet and Margaret (their real names). And Pierre.

The cover picture on this web site is of Stacey Tendeter as 'Muriel' in Truffaut's film.
