Matthew Jukes is one of the pre-eminent young rising stars of the London wine scene. Wine buyer at Conran's Bibendum restaurant (a post he seems to have acquired as much through effrontery as through talent), he also works as consultant to a number of restaurants and presents on radio and television. His publishers would also have us think that he's the new sex-god of the food and wine industry, which he may very well be. At any rate, with Wine he has obviously taken a long look at the needs of the ordinary wine-buying punter and enters the wine-book business at a level deliberately, and significantly, below the level of most expert guides. (Hence the rather startling See-Dick-Run phonetic transcriptions of grape names--MER-LOW, PEE-NO NW-AH, SHUH-NAN-BLONK.) This is the book for the very many for whom choice has outstripped information and knowledge.

Matthew Jukes' no-nonsense approach and infectious enthusiasm make a very appealing mix. He seems to know everything important about wine and is keen to convey it. Most importantly, perhaps, he has a very clear sense of the kind of place wine can and should have in people's lives. Along with other popularisers such as Oz Clarke, Matthew Jukes is concerned with the democratisation of wine--getting the appreciation of wine out of the ownership of elites and introducing as many people as possible to the enjoyment of something that is exciting, modern, delicious, complicated and life-enhancing.
