Covering most of the mathematical ideas and techniques required in the first two years of a general engineering course, this book also provides an introduction to the mathematics used in more advanced work in the main areas of professional practice. Examples have been chosen from a variety of engineering disciplines to emphasise the fact that a single mathematical procedure is often relevant to a variety of physically different problems. In professional engineering practice the purpose of mathematical analysis is always the prediction of the behaviour of a physical system (often a system which still has to be built) which exists in the real world. The mathematical model on which the engineer works, however accurate he or she tries to make it, can never be a perfect description of the real-world system. This book introduces the student to the process of modelling engineering systems and describes the most important techniques used in their analysis. It develops both analytical and numerical methods, with particular emphasis on those numerical methods which are easily translated into computer programs.
