Synopsis

Drawing on a range of contemporary and historical material, this introductory textbook examines the nature of work in its more traditional guises as paid employment as well as the wider context of work as "unpaid labour" in the home. The emphasis is on links between the social processes and institutions of employment and their domestic and social contexts. Thus rather than focusing wholly on male factory workers, the author also considers the significance of gender and race as well as sectional divisions within the class structures.

Review

′An extraordinarily wide–ranging and imaginatively written book on the sociology of work. It is densely argued and hsitorically wride–ranging, with major chapters on class, gender and race as well as on classical comtemporary approaches to work.′

Jon Clark, Professor of Industrial Relations, University of Southampton

′This book has a clarity of exposition and a variety of illustration that makes it an outstanding introductory text. It is an excellent account of the contribution that sociology can make to understanding the world of work.′

William Brown, Professor of Industrial Relations, University of Cambridge
