Powerful and irreversible globalizing forces are at work. Out of the turbulence and momentum are emerging new sets of personal, institutional and global standards pointing the way toward a more workable human ecology. For this evolutionary process we need new directions and expanded contexts for creating a "win-win" world and new scorecards for measuring a saner, more equitable, gender-balanced, ecologically-conscious future. Hazel Henderson, economist and human ecologist, reveals out vast potentials and possibilities.

Chaotic though the world-system may be, more and more groups are moving toward the breakthrough zone, toward sustainable, gender-neutral development where whole new patterns of operation prevail which are based on win-win models and a newly emerging "planetary" culture. And yet industrial society goes on using the growth of Gross National Product (GNP) to measure progress - whereas what is needed, the author argues, are new "scorecards", scorecards which measure our satisfaction with the total human journey by tracking broader economic and social goals including quality of education, healthcare, and environment. How we count, Henderson points out, determines what we get. GNP is based solely on paid production and leaves out a vast majority of economic activity in the world including unpaid labour, environmental costs and risks to future generations. As a step toward quantifying the "new prosperity" of the 21st century, this text presents "Country Futures Indicators" which measure progress toward a more realistic and workable human ecology and help answer the underlying questions that politicians, policy makers, social planners, business people, and social activists are asking: "What is progress, wealth, growth, development, and how do we know when we're succeeding?"
