As the co-author of The Swing Factory we would like to thank users of Amazon for helping to make the book the publishing phenomenon it has become. Since its publication in October 2004 it has sold over 22,000 copies, an enormous amount for a book of its price and subject.
One of the reasons for its success was that it addressed the average golfer. It is intended for those who have struggled for years and offers a time proven method of instruction. The teachings contained within are not theoretical and they have been used in tens of thousands of one to one sessions over the last 50 years.
Above all its message is that 95% of golfers share 95% of the same faults. Day after day and year after year, visitors to The Swing Factory bring with them the same faults. The books message has been welcomed enthusiastically by thousands of golfers. So you can imagine our surprise when we logged on to Amazon to find the books first ever poor review. We are sorry Malcolm Barr if you did not enjoy the book and we would be only to happy to give you a complimentary session to show you how it works in real life! However, we would just like to take up a few points you have mentioned just to reassure you that it really works!
The book is not for the novice only. Since the schools inception in 1952 we have taught hundreds of top line golf professionals and secured many tour victories. After the books publication two new visitors arrived at the swing factory. One was a + 4 handicap player and the other a + 2. They were really struggling badly and had been to every tour teacher, household name, and actually got worse. They were so disillusioned that they almost gave up the game. After reading The Swing Factory they told us that for the first time ever they actually had a clear idea where they had to be at each and every stage of the swing and both have turned their games around and are competing at the highest amateur level.
The book is very basic and that was our intention. Between us we have taught this game for over 60 years and without question 95% of player’s share 95% of the same faults. No matter how many books golfers have read and how many DVDs they have watched most players have no idea where they should be at each stage of the swing. We feel that with the book we have created a sincere easy to follow guide that crystallises our life’s work!
There is nothing old fashioned or new fashioned about teaching the golf swing. Swings are as bad today as they were 50 years ago and the only way long term improvement can be made is by going through each position bit by bit, stage by stage. For it is these positions that keep the club on line to deliver the club head powerfully and squarely to the ball at impact and beyond. The backswing is a passive phase of the swing and the transition from backswing to downswing is indeed the slowest part of the swing. Most new visitors to The Swing Factory are actually taught to stop at the top of the backswing whilst modelling their new swings. This allows them to complete the backswing with ultimate precision and to start the downswing on the correct plane. As their new swing become natural the stop evolves into a very slight pause and then evolves again into a free flowing continuous movement. If you study the swings of Earnie Els and Luke Donald you will have a picture of how the tempo of the swing will look once the swing has been built. In fact if you study the position of these two great players you will see that at each of the four swing stages they are almost identical to our master sequence and are a great example to all. The books success has guaranteed a follow up and the "Swing Factory Volume Two – Programme for Immediate Improvement - 12 lessons and the story behind golf’s Holy Grail" will be out towards the end of next year. The book continuous along the same lines as the first and deals directly and in great detail with the specific faults suffered by 95% of average golfers. It offers in twelve lessons our combined experience of over 60 years of one to one lessons. It is also anecdotal and tells of our experiences in teaching this great game over the last 30 years.
Meanwhile, watch out for the Swing Factory during sky ones coverage of the all star cup, being played over August bank holiday weekend at Celtic Manor. Celebrities from USA and Europe will be lining up in a Ryder cup style challenge. The event should be good fun – try to tune in!
