Synopsis

We are being constantly reminded that there is an obesity crisis for a growing number of the worlds population and of the need to increase physical activity while simultaneously cutting back on food energy intake. Students trained in traditional exercise physiology can understand the basic energy concepts that underlie our obesity epidemic but may lack the molecular basics on which all human science is founded. There is a need for educated people who not only understand exercise physiology but also are thoroughly grounded in the thermodynamic concepts of human energy metabolism at a more detailed, molecular level. This text aims to provide exercise science students with an introduction to biochemistry that will give them this greater insight on the working of metabolism and the human bodys response to physical activity.
