About the Author

An early experience with Parkinson's disease led Boelen to pursue a career in the field of physical therapy and later to specialise in the care of people with PD. In 1978 she received a qualification in B.S. Physical Therapy and today, with over 30 years experience as a Licensed Physical Therapist, she holds the position of Senior Staff Physical Therapist at Glenbrook Hospital in Illinois. Boelen regularly lectures physical/occupational therapists, PD support group leaders, people with PD and their caregivers on Parkinson's Disease as it pertains to physical management: exercise, walking aides, caregiver instruction and education. She is a certified member of both the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) and the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). As a Movement disorder specialist for 18 years she has also worked with patients who have implanted deep brain stimulators.
