Cheryl Stevens' educational background is in experimental education. She has studied and taught recreation and leisure foundations, outdoor leadership and environmental science. As a committed educator, service-learning has become an essential element in many of her recreation classes over the past 15 years. Stevens inspiration for this book came about by an assignment to teach a class involved in a highly complex service-learning project. Knowing that the project had to be a success, and that the students needed to be the ones doing the work, Stevens combined her knowledge and experience in leadership, teambuilding and organisational development to design this step-by-step process.
