Synopsis

The book covers new topics and incorporates two critical changes to the guidelines. Readers should benefit from detailed information on the adoption of VO2 reserve as the basis for writing exercise prescriptions; data on changes in metabolic equations for determining the oxygen cost of various modes of exercise; and recommendations for prescribing exercise for healthy adults and special cases including children, pregnant women, the elderly, the morbidly obese, and people with heart disease, diabetes, pulmonary disease or peripheral vascular disease.

About the Author
David P. Swain, PhD, has been an exercise science researcher and educator for more than 15 years. He is a professor of exercise physiology at Old Dominion University. He is a certified programme director for the ACSM and he has served as a health/fitness instructor workshop director for eight years. Brian C. Leutholtz, PhD, is an associate professor of exercise physiology at Old Dominion University, where he is director of the Therapeutic Exercise Programme for Chronic Diseases. Dr. Leutholtz is a fellow of and certified programme director for the ACSM. He is the author of several recent books on exercise and disease management.
