This book is a reference for the network and system administrators who find themselves having to configure and maintain existing Cisco routers as well as get new hardware up and running. The authors jump right into router configuration, discussing setup, local and wide area networking, security, and monitoring. Why I wrote this book.
When I was approached to write this book I was hesitant. I thought to myself, "Who am I to tell others how they should do things?". In the end I came to the conclusion that sharing my experiences and viewpoints may in fact be beneficial to some. So, I decided to accept. This book is a good starting point for anyone starting in the computer networking field, especially to those that have to monitor and maintain computer networks. At the very least it will shed some light on why certain aspects of Cisco routers are the way they are. For the experienced Network Operator, you may find ideas on ways to use Cisco routers that may not have thought of before.
Cisco Router Configuration and Troubleshooting, 2nd Edition is a reference for you, the network and system administrator who finds yourself having to configure and maintain existing Cisco routers as well as get new hardware up and running. The authors begins by touching on the foundation behind routing technology- networks, protocols and hardware. Then they jump right into router configuration, discussing setup, local and wide area networking, security and monitoring. The troubleshooting section uses a fictitious company to illustrate the differenct scenarios and administrator might encounter. It includes situations that deal with Cisco routers and well as hardware from other companies, mimicking the heterogeneous environment most administrators face. The author also introduces a troubleshooting methodology to help you implement the suggested practices in the book. This section covers the physical and network layer, as well as the protocols involved in routing technologies.
