For Australians, Kokoda is the iconic battle of World War II, yet few people know the names of the men who fought on the track, or even the details of what happened. More Australians died in the months of fighting in Papua, than in any other campaign of World War II. Now bestselling author Peter FitzSimons tells the Kokoda story in a gripping, and moving, style for all Australians.Kokoda was a defining battle for Australia, where a small force of young, ill-equipped Australians engaged a highly experienced and hitherto unstoppable Japanese force on a narrow, precarious jungle track. Again and again, the outnumbered Australians risked everything to stop the Japanese from advancing along the track towards mainland Australia.Kokoda is a superb blend of authority and gripping storytelling history at its best.

When Peter Fitzsimons' account the battles on the Kokoda Trail (he prefers Trail to Track) was published in 2004 it was an immediate success with readers. Such was the response --- almost as if Aussies were reminded of the immense debt they owed to those who fought and died there stemming the Japanese Army's invasion tide from reaching the shores of Australia --- that the book was reprinted five times in 2004, once in 2005 when a paperback edition was released, this, in turn, being reprinted 13 times by 2008. That year fhis first illustrated edition of "Kakoda" was released, with more than 100 b/w photos included, mainly taken by photographers attached to the Australian Army in New Guinea. Paul Keating, a former Prime Minister, has said that for Australians the battles in New Guinea "were the most important ever fought " while a historian of the New Guinea campaign said "surely no war was ever fought under worse conditions than these. Surely no war has ever demanded more of a man in fortitude. Even Gallipoli or Crete or the desert." The author of " Kokoda" has presented a masterful account of this terrible conflict, which saw largely under-trained Aussies sent to oppose a fanatical enemy, with excellent training for jungle warfare, who were as determined to advance as were their opponents to prevent that. Nature provided the most horrible conditions to add to the perils of battle --- near vertical terrain, with dense jungle vegetation, constant rain, tropical heat by day, cold at night, unhealthy conditions all around --- not including bullets, bayonets and shells. Added was an enemy skilled at jungle warfare, largely invisible and often better supplied than the Aussie troops, whose ammunition, food and averything else, had to be carried by man-power over steep and muddy tracks.and the wounded went out the same way. In the end sheer guts, determination, perserverance, courage and heroism was to prevail, but one can today only wonder "how?" Peter Fitzsimons' wonderful history tells how, and why.
