The Value of Urban Design examines the results of a study undertaken by the Bartlett School of Planning for the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE) and the DETR. Using an analysis of selected mixed-use developments in the UK, it looks at how good urban design provides a range of benefits including higher rental levels, lower maintenance costs, enhanced regeneration and increased public support for development.
These economic advantages are accompanied by the less easily quantified benefits of a public sense of safety, enjoyment and pride in their environment.
