A practical introduction to engineering design that first presents a picture of the design task and a theoretical and conceptual framework, followed by a more detailed discussion of specific elements of the designer's art. Numerous solved and unsolved problems are included and presented to encapsulate the format of problems in professional engineering design. All problems provide scope for the student designer to exercise creative talent, and none have unique solutions. Each chapter opens with a listing of concepts to be explored, skills to be developed and, where appropriate, examples of specialized engineering hardware are discussed in the chapter.
