"A world must be remapped"
With these words, Lord Northcliffe, then proprietor of 'The Times', launched the 1922 edition of 'The Times Atlas', referring to the immense changes wrought by the First World War. Seventy years later, world political upheaval has led to just as radical a revision of 'The Times Atlas', to frontiers and to place-names which until recently seemed immutable. Fifteen republics have emerged from the debris of the Soviet Union and many place-names have reverted to their pre-communist forms. New states have been established in the former territory of the Yugoslav Federation.
This new edition reflects changes in other areas too: the shrinking of the Aral Sea, new European highways, the West bank of the Jordan, Poland, Mongolia.
The index to the maps, with 210,000 names, is unique in scope, and has been completely re-edited and reset.
The preliminary sections include a statistical survey of the world's states and territories, an illustrated list of geographical comparisons, a series of magnificent physical maps, and features on cosmology, earth sciences and map projections.
A series of detailed thematic maps provide a clear picture of climatology, energy, food, production, vegetation, mineralogy and population density.
