About the Author
Noah Webster was born in West Hartford, Connecticut in 1758. He came of age during the American Revolution and was instrumental in developing education in early America. He wrote and published the first truly American dictionary.

A handsome single-volume facsimile reprint of the first edition published in London and printed by W. Strahan for J. and P. Knapton, 1755, with a new preface by R.W. Burchfield, From Burchfield's prface: "In the two centuries and more since Johnson's dictionary appeared this great work has settled into legend as being one of the greatest works of the language. It is fitting now that it should be reproduced in facsimile so that the actual book can become more widely known in its first form, rather than in its later abridgements and adaptations. Johnson's dictionary is an outstanding example of literary lexicography. In the second half of the eighteenth century and well into the nineteenth, in its various editions and adaptations, it remained a primary work of reference for scholars and writers of the day until it came to be superseded by the great dictionaries of Charles Richardson and Noah Webster; and in due course by the Oxford English Dictionary itself. In its sturdy Englishness - American vocabulary, for example, is almost all deliberately excluded - in its steady belief in the superiority of the vocabulary of the best writers, in its rejection of foreign expressions, dialectal words, and the more detailed terminology of the sciences and of technology, in its notes on usage and its rejection of illiterate or modish vocabulary, Johnson's dictionary set standards of lexicography to which future generations of lexicographers may yet return when current doctrines of descriptive lexicography pass into desuetude like the doctrines they supplanted."
