About the Author

Ithell Colquhoun was born in India in 1906 but beyond this it is difficult map the facts of her life. She was educated at Cheltenham College and the Slade School of Art. As a Surrealist she experimented with automatism, decalmania, frottage and collage techniques, and invented parsemage (or powdering). Her involvement with alchemy and the occult forced her departure from the English Sub Group in 1940. Today her works are held by Tate Britain, Tate Liverpool, the National Portrait Gallery and many major municipal museums. As a writer she has been favourably compared to William Blake and Walter dela Mare the latter even declaring his admiration for her work before his death. For Peter Owen, in addition to Goose of Hermogenes she authored two travel books on Ireland and Cornwall which deal extensively with mythology and Celtic legend. She lived in Cornwall for the later part of her life and died in 1988.
