It is difficult to over-estimate the problems caused by back pain, both to the individuals who suffer from it and to the community at large. Although a traumatic antecedence of back pain can sometimes be found, the aetiology is often obscure. Diagnosis of the cause of pain may be unclear, and the prognosis is frequently uncertain. Research into back pain and dissemination of the results are essential if these problems are to be overcome. This book presents the results of a meeting of the Society for Back Pain Research, which was concerned with methods for clinical investigation and assessment of back pain.
