Synopsis
This work provides an accessible introduction to the science of volcanoes, and a snapshot collection of the most famous volcanoes worldwide. The first person accounts of these natural and dramatic sites are underpinned by the scientific study of plate techtonics. Terminology is updated in this third edition, especially in the coverage of lahars and avalanches, and of different pyroclastics rocks. There are also new photographs and line art drawings throughout.

About the Author
Robert Decker has been with the U.S. Geological Survey since 1979, spending five years as Scientist-in-Charge at the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. He was on the faculty of Dartmouth College for 25 years.
