"These bright, colorful books offer an exciting look at a variety of engineering ideas and concepts". School Library Journal
Intended for use at home and at school, this book on plants is part of a series which provides a varied introduction to science. It gives step-by-step instructions for a wide variety of projects and activities, encouraging creative thinking and independent exploration of plant life. By discovering how to "make it work", it is intended that the reader actively both absorbs scientific information and learns scientific method. This book provides guides to encourage children to undertake tasks such as collecting, growing and measuring plants, leaves, vegetables, fruit and seeds and suggests many ideas for model-making project such as the construction of cardboard trees to illustrate a tropical forest. Using bark of trees for rubbings and leaves and fruit and vegetables for unusual pattern-making, the child learns to use natural resources for artistic expression. Further projects explain the use of plaster casts for the reproduction of fossils and plant shapes, and natural dyes for the dyeing of fabrics. Through these projects it is hoped children will develop an understanding of the scientific principles encountered in the world around them.
