Synopsis

This book tells the story of one man's life-long love affair with flying. Gordon Levett came from a background so poor that his widowed mother had to hand him over to an orphanage for a time; he left school at 14 with no ambition except to fly. Against all odds he finally won not only the coveted RAF wings but a commission as well. He rose to the rank of Squadron Leader before an error of judgement resulted in his court martial, described objectively and without rancour. But his flying days were not yet over. His skill was needed in another war. Though a Gentile, he volunteered for the Israeli Air Force in the 1948-49 War of Independence against the Arab nations. It was during this war that Levett finally achieved air combat by joining Israel's only fighter squadron. The irony of an ex-RAF pilot flying, on behalf of Jews, the Nazis' notorious Messerschmitt 109 against Egyptian Spitfires is not lost on him. After the war Gordon Levett carried out several top-secret operations for the Israeli government. He later became a tramp pilot, ferrying aircraft all over the globe. This is a story about the struggle for betterment, success and failure, war and adventure, and shows that even a self-confessed nobody can achieve unlikely ambitions and make an unforeseen contribution to life.
