Synopsis

The Second Vienna School: The rise of expressionism in the music of Arnold Schoenberg, Alban Berg and Anton von Webern by Luigi Rognoni, translated by Robert Mann. This distinguished study of musical expressionism, which simultaneously with the work of Kandinsky and his followers, brought to an end the long period of musical romanticism in Austria and Germany and ultimately emerged as the dominant musical school of the modern movement, is at last available in English. It is the most detailed study of the major work of Arnold Schoenberg and his followers, Alban Berg and Anton von Webern, to appear in one volume, analysing musical and literary style and development and the liaison with other art forms, while studying in depth the musical revolution that shocked Europe before the first world war and still arouses strong emotions today. The orchestral and stage works are considered in detail and compared to the work of contemporaries of other musical schools, Mahler, Stravinsky and Strauss for example. The author is not afraid to voice his likes and dislikes, but his enthusiasm for the dodecaphonism of the second Vienna School (Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert were the first) is infectious and will enable many to achieve a greater understanding and enjoyment of what is almost certainly the most significant music of the twentieth century. Professor Rognoni is the best known ltalian musicologist for contemporary music and has spent many years on the present work which has had several revisions prior to British publication. He holds the Chair of Music at Turin University.
