`The Others' is about solipsism, the failure to distinguish
properly between the Self and the Other. It is set in a contemporary
`bourgeois' household presided over by a despotic father who, in a
tempestuous midnight outburst, harangues his family, confesses to a series
of moral `crimes', and failing to get his wife and children to follow suit,
brings in four strange outsiders--the Others of the title--to continue the
interrogation, elicit confessions and introduce reform.

'David Mowat is one of the most talented and powerful of our
younger playwrights'
-- Frank Marcus, The Sunday Telegraph
David Mowat, who was born in 1943, read English at New College
Oxford, and spent two years doing research at the University of Sussex.
Apart from the play in this volume and in `Anna-Luse and Other plays', he
has also written `John', a compelling study of a catatonic, `The
Diabolist', about devil worship in a suburban setting and `Inuit', a play
about the unremitting process of distortion on all human enterprises.
