"This is a remarkable book, conceived in an original way and one which, so far as I know, has not been previously attempted .... Mainstone has a comprehensive knowledge of modern constructional techniques. He sees the same principles at work in the lintel of a megalith and a modern space-frame, in the metal cramps of a neoclassical church and the disposition of reinforcing bars in a concrete hangar. It is precisely this ability to; look back critically from the standpoint of a modern engineer to relatively primitive but often exceedingly complex types of structure that gives the book its value."- Sir John Summerson
Rowland Mainstone is an honorary architect as well as being a civil and structural engineer. Though chiefly engaged for some 30 years in research into many aspects of the design of buildings and bridges today, he has also undertaken extensive studies of their earlier history. More recently he has been a consultant on the structural conservation of historic buildings and a visiting professor of architecture and structure at several universities in this country and abroad.
