Anybody who embarks aboard a sailing vessel, whether it is a sea-airing yacht or a mall sailing dingy, should be aware of the importance of navigation skills. Mosenthal's book, sub-titled, An introduction for all ages, is a good starting place for somebody new to the world of navigation.
This short book (72 pages) explains all the terms and symbols which a sailor is likely to come across whether they are on a chart, map, or on signposts in a harbour. As a sailor you must be familiar with tide charts, navigational equipment and harbour sailing etiquette, all of which is explained in this book. As the length and sub-title suggests, this book is geared for a broad reading age, but perhaps will prove more useful to a young sailor eager to learn the basics. There are drawings and diagrams on every page although each subject is not dealt with in any real detail.
If you have some sailing experience and would like to develop the tandem skill of navigation, then this book is a useful starting place. It will give you a general overview of the various techniques involved in navigation, has a useful glossary of terms and could spark an interest to take your navigation skills to greater heights. --Steven Payne
