The correct use of titles, and other distinguishing marks of honor or of office, has generally become established over a long period through the usage followed by the title-holders themselves and by those associated with them. Similarly, and very gradually, there occur modifications and changes in practice. It seems desirable to point out that while great formality may from time to time be appropriate, and the forms to be used in such cases are therefore given, it will more often be proper to use simpler forms, as indicated throughout in this new edition, in ordinary correspondence, whether business or social. It should be made clear that etiquette is a different subject and is not touched upon in this book. The publishers are grateful to correspondents who have kindly suggested additions and improvements. At the same time they are bound to say that they are unable to provide an advisory or information service.
