Synopsis
This third edition has been revised and updated with new illustrations, and expanded to include many developments in archaeology on both sides of the Atlantic. It contains a survey of modern archaeological methods of studying the past, and examines traditional methodology, fieldwork and excavation, as well as recent scientific techniques. Greene also looks at the application of sociological and anthropological insights. He describes basic practical procedures and clarifies some of the complex means used in dating and analysis. Finally, he explores the relationship between history and archaeology, resolving the conflict between modern progress and the conservation of ancient sites.

I have tried to provide a readable and informative book suitable for just about any interested reader from midteens upwards. I envisage it as a first point of contact with the subject, and hope that it may lead on to wider reading. It is certainly not designed as a textbook, for lack the comprehensive range of knowledge that this term implies. The book reflects my interests, and it does not claim to venture very far beyond my own expertise in the archaeology of Roman and early medieval western Europe. Since introductions to archaeology tend to be written by prehistorians, readers will probably find more examples drawn from historical periods in this book than in most others.
