Synopsis
This is one of a selection of books which are based on the National Gallery's extensive photographic archive. Nearly 150 period photographs are featured in this book that shows the range of dress worn between 1900 and 1920. The author's selection principally comprises photographs never before published and contains unfamiliar images of well-known historical figures such as Beatrice Webb, Christabel Pankhurst, W.G. Grace and Ellen Terry. Each photograph is accompanied by a description of the costume, accessories and setting and also how and where the clothes were made, how they were cleaned and cared for, and how fashion developed during this period.
