Synopsis

Cambridge, for many people, is the most beautiful town in England. Edwin Smith, likewise, is the outstanding English photographer of buildings. It is hardly surprising, then, that Prospect of Cambridge should be a remarkable picture book. Its quality is much more than that of a straight-forward record. The essence of photography, as of the other arts, consists in a point of view, principle of selection, a feeling for the subject, and it is these virtues which Prospect of Cambridge so tellingly reflects. Here are the colleges, the Backs, King's Chapel, Great St. Mary's, the churches, King's Parade, the extensive post-war additions to the University, recorded not by an impersonal lens, but by the sensitive and affectionate eye of a gifted photographer. Nor are they buildings only, but rather the setting for a particular kind of life. The figures in a street or court, the lovers on a bridge, give human scale and meaning to the architecture.

The people and the buildings are two of the elements in the Cambridge scene. The third is time, and it is here that the Introduction and Commentaries of Olive Cook (herself a graduate of the University) are invaluable. Miss Cook makes clear that, in Cambridge especially, the present exists by virtue of the past: she shows the stages by which through the centuries the city has developed and changed, who were its designers and patrons, and for what kind of university the buildings of a given period were put up.
