Formidable is a learning book, teaching the French Language. The language is simple, everyday French, entirely in the present tense, with no object or relative pronouns. There is a great deal of repetition of vocabulary. Pupils who have read Les Duval will recognise many words, and teachers will notice that the stories are shorter and easier than those in Bonnes Vacances and Venez to Paris.
The backdrop/setting is book is about French city children in a multi-racial, working-class district.
The teenage pupils at Manor School, Ruislip, who read these stories, learnt new vocabulary from diagrams on the blackboard, home-made flash cards, overhead projector transparencies and colour slides. Afterwards, words were written down, illustrated, read out loud, learnt by heart and used in games and activities before the class read the stories and answered questions. The exercises called 'composition francaise' were first tackled as a class activity and a variety of sentences were written on the board. Pupils then chose three or four to copy before making up new ones on their own. They were encouraged to think of sentences which were funny or fantastic and, as a result, these rather tricky exercises were popular. The 'conversations' were practiced in groups of four to six pupils and then acted or recorded as a 'radio play'.
A detailed vocabulary and a list of typical questions have been included so that pupils who have been absent, or need to Work on their own, can do so with a minimum of help from the teacher.
