Synopsis
A monograph on Mark Rothko, a leader of the Abstract Expressionist movement whose estate and reputation have been the subject of controversy for more than a decade. Famous for his contemplative paintings of juxtaposed colour fields, Mark Rothko is one of the major artists of the 20th century and one of the founders of Abstract Expressionism. Towards the end of his career, Rothko's work took on a mystical, sombre intensity which reflected a poisoned relationship with the art world that ultimately drove him to suicide. Yet even after his death vitriolic disputes broke out over his ambiguous will. This book is an exploration of the artist and his work over the course of a 50-year career, including his formative years and the four main periods of his stylistic development.
