The medieval institutions brought together in this volume are of very diverse kinds, ranging from abbeys, priories and cathedral churches to the universities of Aberdeen, Glasgow and St Andrews, Edinburgh castle and the royal palace of Holyroodhouse. The chronological span is also wide: the earliest document to survive is a booklist of the mid twelfth century from Loch Leven priory; among the latest are lists of books formerly owned by Mary Queen of Scots. These provide evidence of impressive collections of printed books and pamphlets in Latin, Greek, French, Italian, and English, and give a fascinating insight into the reading, both cultural and political, available to the Queen. The catalogues of the university collections show up certain differences in outlook both among themselves and in comparison with the English universities. The catalogues of the university and collegiate libraries at St Andrews, in particular, are full of printed editions, and many of these books survive or can be otherwise identified. This is a work of the first importance for the history of the book in Scotland.
