This fantastic title reflects back on the transition from the nationalized to the privatized railway industry. The book explores the rapid elimination of the last of the first-generation electric multiple unit (EMU) designs and the disappearance of the slam door stock. Bruce Oliver discusses the evolution of the liveries of the privatized operators through the decade since British Rail ceased to exist. The follow-up to Southern EMUs before Privatisation in Colour for the Modeller and Historian is packed full of more previously unpublished photographs from rail expert and enthusiast Bruce Oliver.

Bruce Oliver has studied Southern Electric trains and the Southern system since his earliest years and has been taking photographs since his school days, throughout Great Britain. Bruce has now produced a portfolio running to about 14,000 transparencies. For the past 15 years, he has been frantically busy taking pictures all over the North of England, an area far from his home, which is based on the South Coast. Bruce s interests are nowadays increasingly focused on railway architecture and infrastructure. Bruce has a professional approach regarding balance, trying always to ensure photographs satisfy the artistic discipline that is the golden ratio
