9780711029859: Tracks To Disaster

Synopsis

Every year hundreds of millions of passenger miles are safely accomplished and on time. Such is the rarity of a major incident on Britain's railway network that even the slightest accident becomes headline news. While society seems to tolerate several thousand fatalities a year on congested roads as being almost an acceptable price to pay for the freedom that the motor car allegedly offers, the most insignificant railway accident can dominate the news for days. In spite of - and perhaps because of - their scarcity, railway accidents have always generated great interest both among railway enthusiasts and the general public. In his latest examination of the issues of railway safety, former signalman Adrian Vaughan narrates in detail the causes and effects of many of the most recent railway accidents to have occurred on Britain's railways. Drawing upon exhaustive research and detailed analysis, the author provides a readable and cogent account of each of the accidents featured. Forthright in his views, Adrian Vaughan is an excellent guide through the often complex subject of railway safety in the modern age.

About the Author

Adrian Vaughan is one of the country's foremost railway historians. He's written over 30 books on various aspects of the railway scene and he has two new volumes out now which he's been talking about on Up All Night. The first is a biography of one of the forgotten men of the Victorian era. He was called Samuel Morton Peto and he was one of the contractors who actually built the railway system. The other book is Adrian's take on the privatisation of the industry in the 1990s which he calls The Greatest Railway Blunder. Born in 1941 Adrian Vaughan spent the first part of his working life as a signalman on the line which was once the Great Western Railway built by Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Up All Night's Howard Benson went to talk to him as he worked in the signal box at Sheringham on the North Norfolk Railway. Below you can listen to our three part feature.
