Synopsis

The beginning of Sheffield's history as a rail centre is prehaps surprisingly marked by the city's disillusionment with the first rail scheme for the area proposed by George Stephenson. It was an inauspicious start and this and geographical reasons meant that is was not until the second Railway Mania in the 1840's that the city gained a locomotive powered railway system. However as the area grew to fame as a steelmaking centre and with continual pressure from local people the area became one of the major nodal points in the rail network. This addition to the "Rail Centres" series is a comprehensive account covering the in-fighting of the local railway politics, engineering hazards and many other facets of the city's rail heritage. Over 200 photos and maps have been collected and so enthusiasts and all connected with the city should be delighted to read this book which captures so well the atmosphere of Sheffield railway history.
