The remarkable French thinker Simone Weil is one of the leading intellectual and spiritual figures of the twentieth century. A legendary essayist, political philosopher and member of the French resistance, her literary output belied her tragically short life. Most of her work was published posthumously, to widespread acclaim. Always concerned with the nature of individual freedom, Weil explores in Oppression and Liberty its political and social implications. Analyzing the causes of oppression, its mechanisms and forms, she questions revolutionary responses and presents a prophetic view of a way forward. If, as she noted elsewhere, 'the future is made of the same stuff as the present', then there will always be a need to continue to listen to Simone Weil.

"What makes this book worth reading - and it is extremely readable - is the clarity and force of the style and the sincerity of the emotions which led Simone Weil to reflect on political philosophy ... It is a book full of interest and insight, penetrating observations and stimulating suggestions with, even in its most pessimistic passages, a humane faith and sincerity that reinforce the reader's confidence in the possibility of a humanistic, rational and liberal order of society."

From the publisher : First published in English in 1958 and out of print for a number of years, Oppression and Liberty is now re-issued. The book presents some of the political thoughts of Simone Weil, one of the foremost writers of this century to have re-opened the question of the human condition. The principal essay, which gives its title to this book, was written when Simone Weil was actively inter ested in the French trade union movement, and was shortly to begin her experience as a worker in the Renault factory. She herself described the essay as 'essentially an analysis of political and social oppression, its permanent causes, mechanism and present-day forms'. The ideas incorporated in this essay have since been borne out in many ways. She raises other important, perennial issues, including the questions: in what does man's liberty consist? Is civilized man essentially freer than primitive man? If not, what pattern of social life could make him so? She considers whether or not the revolution ary movements of our time, and par ticularly Marxism, have helped towards the creation of such a pattern. Simone Weil's ideas on these and other aspects of oppression and liberty are as valid today as they were in her own lifetime. Condition : very good copy. ISBN 9780710074911.
