The late Angus Matheson was one of the most celebrated Celtic scholars of his generation. Born in Harris, of Lewis parents, reared in Uist, with his Matheson roots in Lochalsh, married into a Skye family, a favourite with the scholars of Dublin, and a pupil of Watson in Edinburgh and of Thurneysen in Bonn, Angus Matheson was at the time of his death Professor of Celtic at the University of Glasgow. In the words of John Lome Campbell: 'Angus Matheson had achieved a remarkable synthesis of knowledge of classical Gaelic, Highland history and genealogy, and of the modern language itself. In my opinion he had a pro- founder knowledge of Gaelic than anyone I have known. The loss of such a scholar at the early age of 50 was a terrible blow to Gaelic studies in Scotland.'
The present book is a collection of essays, gathered together on behalf of the Gaelic Society of Glasgow and other allied societies with which Professor Matheson was closely identi- fied. The essays are by friends of Angus Matheson, and reflect his own range of interests which, while primarilydirected towards Scottish Gaelic language and literature, embraced the whole field of Celtic studies.
