Michael Billett was born in Dorset and after several years spent in London and travelling widely, has returned to live there permanently. He wrote the book whilst living in a restored eighteenth-century thatched house in the heart of the Dorset countryside with his wife and two daughters. He is the author of Thatched Buildings of Dorset and The History of English Country Sports (both published by Hale)
