Within the boundaries of Dorset examples of most of the scenic delights of England can be found. The scenery of this one county is so varied as to offer illustrations of almost every kind of countryside in England. It is the under-lying rock that governs what we see, and the haphazard succession of limestone, chalk, sand and clay alters the look of the land with every step. Large arable fields, small tree-lined pastures, desolate unproductive heath, rocky bays and cliff-lined beaches-these are all to be found within the one county. The towns vary, too, from modern industrial Poole to ancient Wareham; and the people who inhabit Corfe, including sailors, farmers and atomic scientists, are as true a cross-section of Britain's population as you would find anywhere. Mr. Wightman's family have farmed in one village for four generations, and he looks at Dorset not only with his own eyes, but through memories which he picked up from an aged grandfather. By the direct spoken word a century is spanned, and yet there is no suggestion of any foolish sighing for past glories. Dorset changes, and certainly not always for the worse.
