The appearance of a certain young man within the Cartwright family circle, and the advent of the Second World War, almost devastated the well-known, Hull-based shipbuilding firm. The city of Kingston-upon-Hull suffered horrendous losses through the indiscriminate bombing of the city during the war, including hundreds of lives, shops, churches, factories, and thousands of houses.
